Festival event volunteer
Emily Trevail spent the summer at some of the UK’s most exciting festivals to help raise awareness of ShelterBox.
Emily said: ‘Having recently returned from Nepal volunteering for an American disaster relief charity, I had seen the devastation that the 2015 earthquake had caused.
'Before I’d even returned to the UK, I started to look for ways that I could continue to help countries that had been hit by disasters similar to Nepal.
‘As I grew up in Cornwall I have always known about ShelterBox, from hearing about them in the local news to them visiting my school to give talks. I didn’t hesitate to look for ways to get involved. They were advertising roles as festival support volunteers – I jumped at the chance!
'With experience working at events, promoting and advertising a brand, I thought this option would be a good way of putting my previous skills to good use. I thought that the opportunity to experience some of the UK’s great festivals this summer would be a bonus!
A fantastic experience
'Volunteering at festivals has been a fantastic experience. Spending a few days with people, sharing stories and experiences of ShelterBox amongst other things and enjoying the festival during downtime creates a great sense of community amongst volunteers.
'It is amazing to be supporting a local charity that is doing such incredible work all over the globe. When talking to the general public about ShelterBox, they are always impressed by the work we do, but also surprised that they haven’t heard of us before.
Emily has met people at the Glastonbury, Isle of Wight and WOMAD festivals last summer, where festival-goers have been able to experience ShelterBox aid first-hand and learn more about the people we help.
