You are here: Recovering after the flooding
Samina, aged 24, lives on a small area of raised land in northern Bangladesh.
She has been a single mother of two, ever since her husband, a rickshaw driver, tragically passed away last year.
When the extensive flooding happened in 2017, Samina was worried that the water would wash away her land and her home. The flooding was the worst she’d ever seen.
We usually have time to get to a place of safety before the floods arrive, but this time they came so quickly with so much water, and we just didn’t have time to prepare.

Samina was right to be worried. The devastating flash flooding trapped her and her children in their home, with no way of leaving the confines of their home.
The only way they could survive was by raising the bed they slept on, then use it as a place of safety for two weeks until the water levels receded.
Samina recalls,
I was scared for my children’s safety, we had almost no food and it was difficult to keep my children warm at night.
The road to recovery

Eventually, the water levels receded and Samina could finally use the aid provided by ShelterBox.
The aid helped her and her family recover from the devastation caused by the floods.
With the tools she received from ShelterBox, Samina is now able to earn money through farming,
It has made such a difference to my life, I can now provide more for my children and prepare for the flooding next year.
