Are you the type of person who can keep a cool head, while creating an exciting experience for others?
We’re looking for volunteers to be the face of ShelterBox at a range of events throughout the year.
These volunteers will play a central role in the successful delivery of our involvement and presence at these events. The role includes:
- Working with ShelterBox staff and volunteers as an integral part of the team to support all aspects of the various events.
- Ensuring that the setting up and taking down of ShelterBox areas is done in a smooth and efficient way.
- Representing ShelterBox to help raise awareness of the organisation and our work.
- Depending on the event, volunteers may be talking to festival-goers, participating in activities or even cheering our challenge event participants along demanding courses.
What we need
We are looking for people who are friendly, personable and good at talking to members of the public.
We need people who are knowledgeable and passionate about disaster relief and the work that ShelterBox does. They must be able to speak confidently about our aid and our operations.
We are also looking for people who are able to work well in a team and stay organised while dealing with an ever-changing working environment.
Emily Trevail is spending the summer at some of the UK’s most exciting festivals to help raise awareness of ShelterBox.
Emily said: ‘Having recently returned from Nepal volunteering for an American disaster relief charity, I had seen the devastation that the 2015 earthquake had caused.
'Before I’d even returned to the UK, I started to look for ways that I could continue to help countries that had been hit by disasters similar to Nepal.
‘As I grew up in Cornwall I have always known about ShelterBox, from hearing about them in the local news to them visiting my school to give talks. I didn’t hesitate to look for ways to get involved.
'They were advertising roles as festival support volunteers – I jumped at the chance!
'With experience working at events, promoting and advertising a brand, I thought this option would be a good way of putting my previous skills to good use.'
A fantastic experience
'I thought that the opportunity to experience some of the UK’s great festivals this summer would be a bonus!
'Volunteering at festivals has been a fantastic experience. Spending a few days with people, sharing stories and experiences of ShelterBox amongst other things and enjoying the festival during downtime creates a great sense of community amongst volunteers.
'It is amazing to be supporting a local charity that is doing such incredible work all over the globe.
'When talking to the general public about ShelterBox, they are always impressed by the work we do, but also surprised that they haven’t heard of us before.
'Helping to spread the word about ShelterBox is such a rewarding experience, knowing that the charity is making a difference.'
Emily has been meeting people at the Glastonbury, Isle of Wight and WOMAD festivals this summer, where festival-goers have been able to experience ShelterBox aid first-hand and learn more about the people we help.
