ONE IN A MILLION
In September 2006, ShelterBox launched its first national education project - called One in a million.
This is an initiative designed to help younger children learn how disasters occur, the impact they have on people around the globe – and what aid agencies like ShelterBox can do to help.
The project has its own interactive website – www.shelterboxschools.org. The website not only explains to pupils how things like hurricanes and tsunamis happen but also features an online forum for teachers and downloadable material for classroom activities.
Get involved
Hundreds of schools across the UK have already signed up to take part, using the project as the basis for lessons, awareness events and raising funds.
As a result, dozens of boxes paid for by schools have already been despatched to people in need under our A Million In Africa banner.

Anna Ferrie, who leads the ShelterBox schools team, said: “We’ve had a wonderful response from the primary schools that have already taken part – one was so impressed they wrote a ShelterBox song for us!"
Anna added: “It’s a serious subject but children will hear about disasters and often be very aware what’s going on in the world even if they don’t understand the reasons.
“This project aims to help them understand how disasters occur and how help can be provided. We’ve tried to put the project together in a way that will make sense to children and designed it in consultation with a number of head teachers and other education professionals.”

Hands on experience
Depending on location and timing, we may be able to arrange for a ShelterBox representative to come in and talk to pupils about the charity’s work.
We also have a number of demonstration boxes available that we can send out so children get a chance to see the contents at first hand. To request a speaker or a demonstration box, please go to forms
