April – June 2006: Java earthquake and East Africa

Boxes continue to arrive for earthquake victims

25th June - Indonesia: As part of ShelterBox's ongoing effort to assist the people of Java, 200 boxes were delivered to the Salvation Army in Yogyakarta for distribution to those in need.

A further 400 boxes have also been sent to Yogyakarta since 16th June and, with the assistance of local Rotary clubs, distributed to those left homeless by the earthquake that struck on 27th May.


More than 100 of these boxes were delivered to assist people displaced by the erupting volcano Mount Marapi, which is about 25 miles north of Yogyakarta. In total, more than 12,000 people have already been housed by ShelterBox following the earthquake.

16th June - Indonesia: Our response teams have now successfully managed to provide living accommodation for over 12,000 people in Shelterbox tents within the earthquake affected regions of Java. More boxes are now being packed ready for dispatch to the area as there are many families who are still in desperate need of help.

30 May - Indonesia: Following the devastating earthquake that struck Java on Saturday 27th May, 400 Tents in 200 Shelterboxes were despatched from ShelterBox's Helston base by road/airfreight on the 29th May 2006. Their ETA in the earthquake-affected area is scheduled for Friday 2nd June.

A further 400 tents in 200 Shelterboxes are being despatched 31st May for delivery on Saturday 3rd June 2006. It is anticipated that many more 100s of boxes will be called for and despatched as over 250,000 people have been made homeless and are in need of shelter.

A Shelterbox "4R Team" arrived in the earthquake are on Tuesday 30th to assist in receipt and distribution of boxes and material to the people displaced and made homeless by the earthquake.

UNICEF work with ShelterBox in Somalia

15th May - Somalia: 500 boxes despatched to UNICEF have now arrived in Somalia by way of Nairobi - these are now being distributed by UNICEF - 300 Boxes ( to assist 3,000 refugees ) are being distributed in the SHABELLE and BENDAIR areas south of Mogadishu and 200 boxes ( to assist 2,000 refugees ) are being distributed in the area around he town of WAJID in North East Somalia - these distributions are being monitored by 4R teams currently in Somalia.

Sudan boxes being distributed


12th May - Sudan: 220 boxes despatched recently to UNHCR have now arrived ( by way of Nairobi / Kenya )  into Southern Sudan and are being distributed in the area around the town of Kajokeji. These will assist over 2,000 returning refugees.

The distribution and use of these boxes is being monitored by ShelterBox 4R team working out of Nairobi in Kenya

Help on way to Somalia


17th April - Somalia: 500 Shelterboxes in transit to Somalia have now arrived in Nairobi ( UNICEF ). These will be forwarded onward to refugees in Somalia by internal UNICEF flights - a Shelterbox 4R Team is in Nairobi assisting and advising UNICEF on transport and distribution of Shelterboxes within Somalia.
