Equador Shelterbox in Equador

January 2001- June 2003: India, Afghanistan, Angola, Iraq & Algeria

June 2003: Algeria

The most devastating earthquake in two decades hit Algeria in May 2003. Registering at 6.8 on the Richter scale, the quake left more than 2,000 people dead, more than 10,000 injured and around 200,000 people homeless.
ShelterBox sent 101 boxes to the region via the Red Crescent Agency as part of a massive international aid effort.

May 2003: Iraq
ShelterBox was one of the first charities to send aid to Iraq following the Gulf War ceasefire in May 2003. Nearly 300 ShelterBoxes were airlifted to Basra as part of a relief flight organised by Virgin Airlines. The aid was used to assist Iraqis returning to the country after fleeing the fighting.

October 2002: Angola
Following the end of the long-running civil war in Angola, approximately 400,000 people are returning and being placed in quartering areas. Acute malnutrition affects a majority of these people together with a shortage of shelter and medicine.
Two consignments of 50 ShelterBoxes have now been sent, including the first four boxes sponsored by ShelterBox USA.

January 2002: Afghanistan & Pakistan
More than 300 ShelterBoxes have now been delivered to help people fleeing from fighting in Afghanistan. The tents are in constant use – some in refugee camps in northern Pakistan, the others at Maslakh, a huge camp near Herat in Afghanistan.
In both cases the boxes were delivered via Feed The Children International.

February 2001: India
The earthquake in Gujarat was the first disaster to which The ShelterBox Trust sent aid. Air India generously flew 143 boxes to Bombay in early February, free of charge, to assist some of the thousands of people made homeless. From Bombay they were transported close to the disaster area where Kalpesh Trivedi, President of the Rotary Club of Petlad, oversaw local arrangements and distributions.
This provided shelter, warmth and cooking facilities for more than 1,400 people.
