AN EQUAL CHANCE
Africa is the world’s second largest continent. It covers 22% of the earth’s landmass and has more than 50 countries and 1,000 languages - as well as an incredibly varied geography and immense potential material wealth.
However, it is also home to some of the world’s greatest poverty and suffering. It is estimated that at any one time there are around 15 million displaced people in Africa – most of them women and children.
These are people who, often through no fault of their own, have lost their homes as a result of famine, war and other disasters like floods and earthquakes.
Why A Million In Africa?
ShelterBox has set itself the ambitious target of providing emergency accommodation for one million displaced people – a project designated as A Million In Africa.
That's because we believe everyone has the same right to human dignity and an equal chance in life.
ShelterBox cannot solve Africa’s problems but by providing the basics of shelter and survival we can reduce suffering and improve the chances of those in need.
One of ShelterBox’s first deployments was to help displaced people in Angola.
Since then, aid has been sent to a number of other African countries: including Algeria, Burundi, Kenya, Liberia, Somalia, Somaliland, Sudan, Swaziland and Uganda.
The value of what ShelterBox is doing – and the quality of the aid provided – is reflected by the fact that UN agencies have previously asked for 40,000 boxes to use in the countries of East Africa alone.
With your help we can do it
Providing the 100,000 boxes needed to house one million people will cost £49 million.
In Africa, our volunteers work alongside local Rotary clubs and charities as well as other charities like the Salvation Army and the Red Cross.
Delivering help for A Million In Africa happen is an ambitious challenge and so far ShelterBox is only just starting to tackle the problem in Africa but we can make it happen with your support.
